ABC Order
Second graders must learn to put words in alphabetical order to the third letter. I require students to reference the alphabet (on name plates, above chalkboard, on word wall) when putting words in ABC order.
In addition to the lessons below, students write weekly spelling, word wall, and vocabulary words in ABC order.

Letter Ordering
Students generally have trouble arranging words in ABC order after the first letter. Letter ordering can be a fun, stress-free experience for kids to view the essential first, second, or third letters in isolation.

Word Legos
This is a SUPER idea (via) where words are glued to the side of Lego blocks. Students or student teams are given a basket of random blocks and must stack them in ABC order.

ABC Cups and Sticks
Write sight words on the edge/lip of Styrofoam (or inexpensive) cups. Write more sight words on Popsicle sticks. Hold a relay race where student teams have a marked amount of time to stack the cups or put the sticks in ABC order.
