Instruction around word parts is usually reserved for word study, but this skill is so prevalent in reading comprehension and vocabulary and I believe it to be an important part of shared reading.
There are many analogies to how word parts work together:

Prefix Paint Palettes
A super cute activity from here and here has students create a paint palette for a given prefix. Then students add “blobs” of paint, which are really construction paper cut outs with words that use the prefix and the word’s meaning inside or underneath.

Sunny Suffixes
From this site, in the same vein as the prefix paint palettes, students create a sun with a give suffix. The rays coming from the sun are words that use the suffix. On the back of each ray, I’d have students write the meaning of the word.

Paper Plate Sorts
Label a three section paper plate with “prefix,” “base word,” and “suffix.” Students can use word sorts to cut words apart by prefix, root word, and suffix. They sort the word pieces onto a paper plate. Word parts can be rearranged to make new words. (via)
Word Clowns
Students cut out clown faces, hats, and bow ties. The faces are root words. The hats are prefixes and the bow ties are suffixes.
Students arrange and rearrange the clowns to make different words. I have them practice arranging multiple times before gluing their final combinations.
Mr. Potato Head Flip-chart
This Promethean board lesson provides great introduction and practice of both prefixes and suffixes.
