Equivalent Fractions
Under the Elmo, put 1 blue chip and 1 red chip. Discuss how 1/2 of the group is blue and 1/2 is red. And 1 more blue chip and 1 more red chip. Discuss the new fractional amounts – 2/4 blue and 2/4 red. Show how 1/2 is still blue and 1/2 is still red. Continue the pattern through sixths, eighths, and tenths. Allow students to create their own equivalent fraction pictures with chips or manipulatives (with different colors).
Play-Doh Fractions
Use play-doh and a plastic knife or straight edge to create half, thirds, fourths, etc.
